Director of Equity, Inclusion and Culture

Candidate Information

Shelter exists to defend the right to a safe home – because home is everything. Our task is to overcome the housing emergency which stands in our way. We’re working towards creating a new generation of public housing, at rents that people on low incomes can afford. We need to shift the national conversation on public housing, rediscovering its radical origins and building a broad coalition of support for a new era of mass affordable housebuilding. With a mandate like that, we can begin to create the safe, high-quality and low-carbon homes we deserve, in the parts of the country where they are most needed.

We are proud of our dynamic and focused response to the pandemic. But the difficulties of the past year have also presented a challenge to the momentum of our ongoing culture change programme, and we want to ensure that this remains on track. Our commitment to equity within Shelter is indivisible from our external commitment to social justice and anti-racism, which underpin our defence of the right to a safe home. We must ensure all our people (including volunteers) have an equal chance to enjoy and be fulfilled in their work, to contribute to Shelter’s purpose, and to progress through Shelter’s hierarchy should they wish to do so.

This is where you come in. Achieving this substantial change will require a ‘One Shelter’ approach: a solution that is tailored to the problem, and one that’s not afraid to challenge the status quo. We’ve identified the programme of work that’s needed to transform the organisation into one that prioritises intersectional racial equity and social justice. We’ve agreed the resources and capacity that will be needed to build and embed this culture. All that remains is to invite you to be the person who’ll make it happen.
